Hey everyone. My name is Jason. I have two major passions that I spend my free time doing: Watching football and playing music. For the last year or so, I’ve been writing a Minnesota Vikings Blog called The Viking Ship, and I have discovered that I really enjoy blogging when the topic is so important to me. So, since I’ve become pretty established in my routine of writing in the Viking blog, I thought it would be a good time to add a music blog as well.
I’ve been playing music for a long time. I’m currently 30 years old, and I think I started playing guitar when I was 16. When I was around 19 I learned how to play bass, and when I was about 20 I added drums and piano to the list. I’ve been in a few bands over the years, mainly when I was in my early 20s. The two bands that I was in that did the most writing and playing were Force That Binds and Mint Pink. If you search the web, I’m sure you’d find some old pages floating around out there with info on those bands. Maybe at some point recordings from those bands will make it into posts on this blog.
At first I, like a lot of musicians, had dreams of being a “rock star”. Actually, I didn’t care a ton about the fame and fortune (although that would be nice). What I really wanted was music to be my job. I wanted to spend my days playing music.
As I got older, my interest shifted from playing music more towards just writing good music. Music stopped being something that I wanted to do for a job, and started being some thing that I had to do for me, my songwriting parters, and anyone who would listen. Writing and recording music became my creative outlet, and I started to feel like I needed that outlet.
Before you start reading my blog, you should know that I have never written a “hit” song in my life. I’ve helped write songs that have gotten local radio play, and songs that listeners would come to shows expecting to hear (all in my band days), but I’m not the kind of songwriter who can teach people how to write a hit song that a top artist will want to record and will eventually make you rich. I’ve never written a song that anyone anytime has ever wanted to record, and to be perfectly honest, I probably never will. If that’s what you’re looking for, I certainly don’t blame you, but this site probably isn’t for you. There are lots of good sites on the internet that can probably help you out. Just google something along the lines of “how to write a hit song”.
Instead, I’m more interested in musical creativity. I’m more interested in thinking about different ways to use instruments, or new ways of putting different genres together. I’m fascinated by people who can think outside the box when it comes to music. I’m really impressed when people can make their own instruments that sound good, or when people can take toys or games and turn them into musical machines. I love it when people use effects on instruments that they weren’t intended for.
Don’t get me wrong… I still do a lot of “straightforward” writing when it comes to music, and I still enjoy a well written radio friendly song. But again, there’s a lot of other sites out there that can help you out with those things way better than I can.
But hopefully I can help you discover creative musicians, or help you find a new approach to writing creative music for yourself. I’ll be presenting ideas about possible ways of trying new things. To be honest, some of them will seem ridiculous to you, but others will grab you and inspire you to great things.
The trick to using this blog successfully will be to not take the ideas and thoughts presented literally. Instead, think about what is posted here, let it bounce around in your brain a little bit, and see if you can mold it into something that works for you.
