The RPM Challenge

WRITING EXERCISE The RPM Challenge

A few months ago when I was mentioning one of my musical projects (BHP) I mentioned that we got officially started by doing last year’s RPM Challenge.

For those who don’t know, the RPM Challenge is a challenge to write and record an album in the month of February.  The main web site defines an album as a collection of 10 songs or 35 minutes of music.  The idea is that by forcing yourself to complete music at a fast pace will lead to new kinds of inspiration.

Here’s a quote from the main site:

Don’t wait for inspiration – taking action puts you in a position to get inspired. You’ll stumble across ideas you would have never come up with otherwise, and maybe only because you were trying to meet a day’s quota of (song)writing. Show up and get something done, and invest in yourself and each other.

It’s not a contest… you don’t win any prizes or anything like that.  It’s just a way to get yourself motivated to do great things musically.

Of course, you don’t have to sign up for the challenge to take part.  You can do it by yourself.  But signing up gives you access to all sorts of user blogs and forums and other things to keep you motivated and on task.

Taking part in the RPM Challenge last year with BHP was probably the best thing I did in 2009 for my own personal musical creativity.

You should really think about doing it!

Head to RPMChallenge.com to learn more.

Oh, and by the way, here is a link to the album that BHP created last year.  We will be doing it again this year.  I’ll make a blog post about the album when we get it done.
