Random Inspiration: Some crazy ideas
by Jason Hannah on Dec.10, 2009, under Random Inspiration

A lot of times I give you some random ideas for potential song titles or song topics to think about, but today I’m going to give you some random musical ideas to think about.
Some of these might be a little tricky to pull off, but don’t let that stop you from trying.
As always, read the ideas literally, think about them, and then read them again trying to approach them from a completely different direction. A lot of times it’s that unusual direction that will inspire creativity.
-Try switching tempos in the middle of a song. Perhaps get faster (or slower) after every chorus. Do this several times throughout the song.
-Try mixing up genres. Dark rock guitars with a choir of vocals. Country music with techno vocal samples. Iowegian Death Polka. Surf Lounge Punk Funk.
-Stretch yourself by writing stretched out songs. Try writing an 8 minute song with lots of interesting parts.
-Write a guitar riff using only two guitar strings…. they can be any two strings as long as they’re not right next to each other. Turn it into a song.
-Write a song where no single instrument plays except drums more than 1 note at a time. If you want to form chords, it’ll take at least 3 different instruments to play them. Or at least 2 for power chords. Otherwise everything has to play single notes and riffs.
