Free Software: Virtual Muse

by Jason Hannah on Oct.23, 2009, under software

This is actually a piece of software that I wrote myself. I call it the Virtual Muse.

The purpose of the software sort of matches the purpose of this blog… it’s supposed to inspire creativity. There are 3 different sections to the software: A title generator, a topic suggester, and a random musical idea generator.

These 3 pieces of the software use a randomizer to pull in different words, titles, genres, and names. Sometimes the suggestions that this program makes are ridiculous. To really get the full value from something like this, though, learn to not read the suggestions literally.

For example, if you get a title that says “Sally Falls”, think about that title for a minute. Maybe you don’t know anyone named Sally, but you know someone named Jane who is going through a trying time. Maybe you want it to be an encouraging song, though, so instead of “Falls”, you change it to “Won’t Fall Again”. Then, you decide you don’t want to use Jane’s name, so you change it to “She”. With a little creative thinking, you took the title “Sally Falls” and turned it into a song idea called “She Won’t Fall Again.”

Use the suggestions from the program as brainstorming prompts.

I’d be interested to know if any of you actually use any ideas that stem from this software. Drop me a line if you do!
