Topic Ideas
Hey all
Here are some more writing topic ideas for you. Use these as writing prompts to exercise your creativity. Change it up: Sometimes you should try to write short songs, or maybe poems, or perhaps sometimes you can write a short story about it instead. The basic ideas is to get the words flowing out of your brain in creative ways.
Try not to look at them literally (unless of course the literal meaning inspires you!) Twist the meaning of the words… see what you can come up with!
-Write about how well someone else can sing
-Write about your views on the ties between Israel and the USA
-String these random words into a usable topic. (Try to think outside the box) – Lavender, My House, Problematic, Ballad, and Spanish
-Write about being a neat freak
-Try to write a Norwegian love song

Write Your Own Backing Music Online
by Jason Hannah on Jul.26, 2010, under Songwriting Process

I found a cool link while I was surfing the web this weekend. It’s a site called JamStudio. The site allows you to enter in a chord progression, pick some instruments to play the progression for you, pick the style you want the individual instruments to play in, and it creates a backing track for your music.
It’s really a pretty cool idea. If you didn’t have the ability or the time to record a full backing track for a song you wrote, you could theoretically use a site like this to create your music for you.
I have to admit that I just tried out the free portion of the site. It allowed me to create the music, but it didn’t allow me to convert it to an MP3 and download it onto my computer.
It looks like in order to be able to save your songs to MP3 format, it requires a $25 subscription fee, but that fee will last you 6 months, and apparently gets you access to 2 desktop applications to help you write music.
It seems like a fun program to play with.
If you guys want to check it out, the site is located at http://www.jamstudio.com/Studio/index.htm

Cover Song of the Week (07-24-10) Roses
by Jason Hannah on Jul.24, 2010, under Cover Song

Cover Song Of The Week
I love musical creativity (hence this blog), and I really feel like one interesting way of being musically creative is to take a song that already exists and turn it into your own. I know it’s not technically “songwriting”, but not all musical creativity is centered around songwriting.
My plan is to share some of my favorite song covers from around the web every weekend.
I love stuff like this… this is a bluegrass cover song of the hip hop song Roses by Outkast. I really enjoy covers that take a song into a new genre.
The video is fun, too.
