A while back me and Jim (James Blair who has some articles published on this site) came up with a huge list of random ideas to provide inspiration for new songs, riffs, etc. We ended up with 50 of these random ideas, so I thought I’d share them with you. I’m going to break them up into 5 different groups of 10.
You can find the other parts here:

50 Ideas For Coming Up With New Musical Ideas (21 – 30)
21. Make up a new sound/effect in your recording software by blending several effects and/or sounds, then sit down to write a song around it
what you came up with.
22. Find a random picture on the internet, then write a song about that picture…. maybe making up a back story for the picture, or maybe just describing the picture in detail. Try to use instrumentation that helps recreate the picture in the listeners mind.
23. Write a guitar riff using only one guitar string (to keep you from using familiar patterns). Turn that riff into a song
24. Write a guitar riff using only two guitar strings…. they can be any two strings as long as they’re not right next to each other. You can use the 1st and the 3rd, the 1st and the 5th, the 2nd and the 4th, ect. Turn your new riff into a song.
25. Pick up a professional CD. Write one single song with lyrics that contain every song title from that CD in its entirety.
26. Download a random video clip from the internet. Write a soundtrack for that video.
27. Write a short story. Record that story on a CD, complete with background music that goes throughout the whole thing
28. Write a song about your job. Try to look at things from a different light or point of view. Maybe write it as your secretary or your boss.
29. Write a song about your high school activities. If you’re out of high school, try to write it as if you’re still there… maybe even in the genre of music that was popular with people you knew back then.
30. Write a lighthearted tribute song about your favorite comedian. Write it as if it’s a theme song to a weekly stand up special he or she is going to have on TV.

I am not a good singer, because I do not have a good voice. I decided to compose instrumental music instead. For life.
I’ve written a lot of instrumentals. I think they can be very fulfilling musically.
